Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

II Corinthians 5:6-9

Home.

I'm longing for it.

I've been on the road a lot this summer and am presently holed up in a frigid hotel room as antidote against the Dallas heat. And that comes just a few days after going to see 1 of 8 in that foreign country. Which came just a few weeks after heading to our hometown stomping grounds to visit family.

I find myself longing for my bed. And my sheets. And my towels. And all those other little things that meet my preferences and spell home to me.

I do enjoy travel and visiting loved ones and having new experiences. I really do.

But I love being home. Love it.

Love the days where I don't have to get in the car and go anywhere. Love the days I can work from my home office and knock a ton of stuff off my to-do list. Love the days I can just be home.

But seeing as how I don't have a goal to be a hermit, life is naturally going to take me some miles. And those miles are going to require being away from home.

And even 'home' isn't exactly a fixed term.

Mike and I have lived in eight different abodes in our 22 years of marriage. And I know that doesn't even hold a candle to the record held by friends of ours who have made the military their careers.

The furniture changes, the scenery changes, the neighbors change.

But I still have the love for and need for home.

I think the Lord puts it in us, that desire for home. We equate it to walls we call ours and decors that represent our style and knick knacks and mementos that pepper our memories.

But deep down, we know it's all transitory.

So in this season of travel and schedule upheaval and longing for my own sheets, I'm reminded.

That's not really home.

This is really all just one big long hotel stay until I get to where I'm going.

And I bet the Lord knows my favorite sheet thread count and has 'em in the linen closet for me.

Home sweet home.
